AFC Telford Utd 1-2 Welling Utd

The late arrival of the Welling United team caused a delayed kick off on a bitterly cold evening in Shropshire.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

It turned out to be a bitter-sweet evening for Welling who won well to move nine points clear of the relegation zone with it transpiring that it was to be Jamie Day’s last game in charge as he moved to Ebbsfleet United along with Barry Ashby and Dean Frost.

Defeat for AFC Telford United left them in a perilous position and they only looked dangerous when launching in long throws Kyle Brownhill.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Tony Gray headed an early one over before Ben Jefford tested Freddy Hall with a low drive.

Steve Akrigg came off second best in a tackle with Aristide Bassele and had to be replaced causing a complete re-shuffle for the hosts.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Gray went wide at the near post from another long throw before Karl Ledsham had a shot saved.

Kieron St. Aimie had two chances before the break, first skewing wide before firing just over.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Two minutes after the break, Welling went ahead when Bassele’s cross gave Tyrone Marsh a chance from close range that he finished emphatically.

Adam Farrell had a chance from a half cleared corner but his shot was well saved by Buchel.

St. Aimie then came close again with a header from Joe Healy’s cross before Telford stunned the visitors with an equaliser. A goalmouth scramble ended with Andy Parry smashing home.

FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Their reprieve was short-lived however, as Marsh turned provider for Bassele to head home.

After that, there seemed little danger of Welling throwing the game away and both Bassele, twice, and St. Aimie came close to putting gloss on the team’s performance.
