The Charlton Under-21 side won the National Division 2 Play-Off Final at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, to add another trophy to the league title and Kent Senior Cup.Charlton Athletic

There was a decent crowd for the match, possibly attracted by the opportunity to be photographed with the Football League trophy.

Michael Smith gave the Addiicks the lead in the opening seconds but Cardiff levelled by the quarter of an hour mark.

That was the end of the scoring until the closing minutes of the second period of extra time. First Joe Piggot fired Charlton ahead again, then Ade Azeez sewed the match up with the third.

In possibly the biggest FA Cup Final upset since Lawrie Sanchez’s goal took the Cup to Wimbledon back in 1988, Wigan also triumphed 1-0. Manchester City had Pablo Zabaleta sent off when Andre Mariner showed him a second yellow card.

Former Palace player, Ben Watson, headed home a last minute winner from a right-wing corner to take the trophy to Wigan for the first time.

Wigan were worthy winners, they were the better team on the day. The FA Cup still retains its magic.
