Ben Amos and Dillon Phillips will scrap to be Charlton’s keeper this season. It will be the first time for a number of years that the Addicks will have two senior keepers of their own.
Both keepers have shown flaws during the pre-season campaign with Amos showing slightly the better form.
Until last Tuesday at Colchester that is. Amos did not have one of his better nights, and the pendulum may have swung back towards Phillips.
On Saturday, Lee Bowyer gave each keeper 45 minutes, an indication that the manager was still undecided. Phillips was the first-half keeper, with Amos taking over after the interval.
Phillips was solid but Amos may feel he could have done better.
Amos undoubtedly has the better distribution – vital in the modern game – and is also a very vocal keeper. But Phillips’ distribution is getting better – he made steady progress in this area last season.
Phillips now has big match experience. After gifting Sunderland an early goal, he recovered to have a fine game at Wembley.
Plenty for Bowyer to ponder, but he may keep faith with the academy product at Blackburn.
