With the arrival of Roger Johnson and Diego Poyet, and the return of Callum Harriott, Joe Pigott and Ayo Obileye, the Addicks now have 43 professionals on their books.
Howeverm this number includes players such as Dillon Phillips and Tony Watt, who are out on loan and unlikely to appear at The Valley this season.
Though the numbers seem fine, the problem is the lack of certain types of players. Charlton do not have a genuine creative central midfielder for example, and the return of Harriott gave Karel Fraeye his first genuine winger.
Two wingers delivering crosses into the box would bring the best out of Simon Makienok.
Though Fraeye will be expecting to make further additions to his squad during the window, there will departures. As well as Watt joining Cardiff permanently, Franck Moussa and Zakaraya Bergdich are also expected to move on.
Depending on arrivals, some of the fringe players may go out on loan, particularly some of the younger ones.
When the window closes, the head coach will expect to have a better quality squad at his disposal as the season enters its run-in.
Fraeye was anxious to add more leadership on the pitch, and Johnson and Rhys Phillips will add that quality.
It will be fascinating to see how strong a team Charlton put out at Colchester on Saturday.
