Addicks set to change tactics

The high flying Eagles will be looking to make progress towards the automatic promotion places on Saturday.Charlton Athletic

Cardiff have a tough looking game at Leeds on the same day and Palace will hope to cash in if the Bluebirds slip up.

They will view the visit of Charlton with some relish, the Addicks have won five, drawn four and lost eighteen of their league encounters at Selhurst.

Palace have been in indifferent form at home since beating arch rivals, Brighton, at the beginning of December. They have drawn with Blackpool, Huddersfield, Bolton and Stoke in the FA Cup since the Brighton game. Their solitary win came when they beat Wolves 3-1 on New Year’s Day.

One factor in Charlton’s favour is that the Eagles have a long journey to play a rearranged match at Huddersfield on Wednesday.

Palace’s strength is undoubtedly in midfield. Flying wingers, Yannick Bolasie and Wilfried Zaha, will provide Glenn Murray with plenty of ammunition. Mile Jedinak is another who will be a threat.

Palace have agreed terms with Peterborough for winger, George Boyd, and the Eagles are also hoping to sign Sylvan Ebanks-Blake from Wolves before the transfer window closes. Ebanks-Blake is a pacy, powerful striker who has caused the Addicks problems in the past.

Ian Holloway is an attacked minded coach, so it is no surprise that he is looking to add to Palace’s already impressive array of offensive options.

The weakness with attack minded sides is that they leave themselves vulnerable at the back. Chris Powell is a naturally cautious coach and will probably persevere with his 4-5-1 shape in an attempt to stifle Holloway’s team.

A more adventurous philosophy could pay dividends though. If Charlton push on, rather than just soak up pressure, they may upset Palace’s game plan. If the hosts are put on the back foot, with their relatively poor recent home record, their confidence may just be sapped.

The attacking policy brought the Addicks an unexpected win at Watford and a similar policy at Selhurst could give Charlton their best chance of causing an upset.
