Addicks set for January sale
Addicks set for January sale

The Mirror reported on Thursday that a number of players could be sold in January to balance Charlton’s books.

A figure of £2m was mentioned, about half of which could come from the sale of Tony Watt to Cardiff.

The money is probably being earmarked for incoming transfers, as the Addicks seek freshen up their squad for the second half of the season. But who will come in?

Roger Johnson seems set to be an early arrival. Johnson is currently with Indian Super League side, Pune City.

Another defender likely to arrive at The Valley in the next few days is Middlesbrough’s Rhys Williams.

Williams is a central defender, who can also play at right-back and in midfield. The 27-year-old hails from Perth in Western Australia and has been out for a year after rupturing his Achilles for a second time.

Several Championship clubs – including Preston and Rotherham, as well as Charlton – are keen to take fit again Williams on loan.

He has now made a number of appearances for Boro’s Under-21 side and Boro boss, Aitor Karanka, had this to say about the Williams situation:

“I am considering sending him (Williams)out on loan. He is a very good player but he needs games to get back to his best potential.

“But it will be very difficult for him to play in this time at this minute, so it may be that he needs to go out to another club to play.

“A couple of good clubs have expressed an interest and that doesn’t surprise me because he is a very good player.

“We will all sit down soon and talk about the options for Rhys.

“If he is playing, and if he is fit, he can be a good player for this team,” concluded Karanka.

Williams played for Wales at Under-21 level, but pledged his allegiance to his country of birth at senior level, and has won 14 full caps for Australia.

If he has fully recovered, Williams will be a more than useful asset for Karel Fraeye.

The head coach is thought to be keen on a couple of Premier League midfielders. One is currently injured, the other is former Addicks Player Of The Year, Diego Poyet.

Poyet’s career has not really taken off at West Ham, and he is currently on loan at Milton Keynes Dons. Poyet is not in the Dons’ team at present, and a loan back to his first club may be a good solution for all parties.

Charlton badly need some fire power if they are to escape the Championship relegation zone. It would not be a transfer window if there was not speculation about Yann Kermorgant returning to The Valley.

There may be more chance of it happening this time though. The 34-year-old talismanic Breton came desperately close to making the move in November.

A loan deal had been agreed with Bournemouth, only for the Cherries to change their minds because of an injury to Glenn Murray.

Top Bournemouth striker, Callum Wilson, is a long term injury victim, but Kermorgant’s appearances have mainly been limited to cameos from the bench.

Eddie Howe will be looking for fresh striking talent during the window, and could allow Kermorgant to leave.
