Charlton faced Huddersfield in the round of the last sixteen of the Premier League Under-21 Cup on Tuesday afternoon.

Charlton Athletic

The game was switched late last week to Stalybridge Celtic’s Bower Fold ground.

The game was played on a sticky pitch that cut up badly as the match progressed. Interestingly, the referee was an airline pilot.

Both sides spurned decent chances. Joe Pigott had the best chance for the Addicks in the first half, but failed to make contact with Levander Pyke’s pass when just a yard from goal.

The game was deadlocked at 0-0 after 90 minutes, but there were few chances created in extra-time. Worryingly, first team fringe player, Terrell Thomas, had to be replaced after picking up an injury during the second period of extra-time. Bob Peeters will be disappointed to lose another central defensive option.

The game went to a penalty shoot out and it took 16 spot-kicks to settle the tie.

The Terriers went first and converted their first three penalties. Pigott, Ahearne-Grant and Munns all scored to maintain parity for the Jason Euell’s team.

Huddersfield missed their four and fifth kicks but both Muldoon and Charles-Cook spurned the opportunity to win the tie for the visitors when they both fired over the bar.

The hosts scored with their sixth and seventh attempts, but Lennon and Konsa matched them to square things up.

The Terriers converted their eighth penalty but unfortunately for the Addicks, Mikhail Kennedy’s effort struck the bar, so Huddersfield went through 6-5.

Charlton: Phillips; Pyke (Osborne 90), Lennon, Thomas (Konsa 110), Edwards; Muldoon, Munns, Cumberbatch (Charles-Cook 79), Kennedy; Pigott, Ahearne-Grant.

Subs (not used): Mitov, Ansah.

Referee: Peter Gibbons (Wirral).

Nick Pope’s departure to Bury for the rest of the season was confirmed by the club on Tuesday morning, as was the arrival of Marko Dmitrovic from Upjest. Dmitrovic has been brought in to compete with Neil Etheridge for the keeper’s shirt during Stephen Henderson’s enforced absence.

The news was followed later in the day by the announcement that Tony Watt had signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at the Valley.

Dmitrovic will wear the number 36 shirt, while Watt will have his favourite number 32. These numbers were previously allocated to Tobi Sho-Silva and Harry Gerard.
