Addicks miss out on title chance

The Charlton Athletic development squad missed the opportunity to sew up their divisional title at Brighton on Wednesday evening.Charlton Athletic

A strong Addicks line-up, including Scott Wagstaff, Danny Hollands and debutant Florent Rouamba, went down 3-2 to the Seagulls.

Ade Azeez and Joe Piggot with a penalty were the Charlton scorers. The Under-21s will now have to beat Millwall on Monday to edge out Cardiff on goal difference to take the title.

The summer will see the break up of the 2011/12 promotion winning squad. Many of the group are out of contract and there will be many coming and goings during the close season.

John Sullivan is likely to make his move to AFC Wimbledon permanent in the summer and Bradley Wright-Phillips is likely to do the same at Brentford. Wright-Phillips has always scored in streaks and after a slow start at Griffin Park, the striker is now in fine form.

The Bees are pressing for promotion and could well face Charlton in the Championship next season.

The player who was earmarked to take over Wright-Phillips’ scoring mantle was the injury prone Danny Haynes. Haynes is again on the sidelines and is another whose contract ends in the summer.

Haynes’ pace is a lethal asset but injuries have limited him to just twelve starts and eight substitute appearances this season.

It is a moot point as to whether a prolific striker is necessary these days. Peter Whittingham tops the Cardiff scoring charts with just eight goals, four of which came from the penalty spot. The other automatic promotion spot will probably go to Hull, another side who do not possess a prolific marksman.

It will be interesting to see if Chris Powell continues with playing Michael Morrison as his right sided central defender at The Valley on Saturday. Powell made the switch at Barnsley and carried it on at Cardiff.
