Striker, Alex Revell, was on the list of players that Chris Wilder wanted to bring to The Valley.
It was widely thought that Revell would also be wanted by Russell Slade, as the pair have previously worked together at Leyton Orient.
Wilder would obviously still be interested in the Cambridge born striker, so a tug-of-war between Charlton and Sheffield United looked likely.
It came as a total surprise when Northampton announced Revell’s capture on Tuesday. A target man by trade, the much travelled Revell, has scored 93 goals in his 416 league appearances.
Geographically, a move to Sixfields made a lot of sense for Revell, who was playing for Milton Keynes Dons at the end of the 2015/16 season.
Northampton are making early moves to be ready for the new season.
The Cobblers made their second acquisition of the week, when they completed the signing of Swansea left-back, Raheem Hanley, on Tuesday.
Charlton appear to have Lee Novak at the forefront of their minds as a striking option.
Addicks fans will have been pleased to Johann Berg Gudmundsson supply the assist for Iceland’s equaliser against Portugal on Tuesday evening. The game ended in a 1-1 draw.
