Today marks the 20th anniversary of Charlton Athletic’s return to The Valley.
In that time, they have won promotion to the Premier League twice, gone up to the Championship, as well as suffering three relegations. The first promotion to the Premier League was achieved at Wembley in May 1998 in that never to be forgotten game with Sunderland.
Alan Curbishley and Steve Gritt, Curbishley on his own, Iain Dowie, Les Reed, Alan Pardew, Phil Parkinson and Chris Powell have been in charge of the Addicks, though Curbishley was the man in charge during the halcyon days.
Back to the current day and tickets are now on sale for the cup tie against Huddersfield. Priced at £15 for adults, £10 for those over 60 or under 21 and £5 for the under 18s, tickets are probably dearer than either club would have wanted to charge. The adult price is the minimum that the FA will sanction at this stage of the competition. A tie against a club from the same division, is probably as unattractive a fixture as it is possible to get for a cup match. It will be a surprise if the gate reaches 10,000.
Two appointments were made to the senior management team on Monday. Steve Bradshaw was installed as Chief Operating Officer, having held a similar position at Colchester until December 2009. Prior to that, Bradshaw was involved with Colchester’s community scheme, so has followed a similar route to that of Peter Varney and Steve Waggott.
David Joyes has stepped up to take the role of Chief Finance Officer at the club. The Addicks now need to appoint a marketing guru to complete their managerial revamp.
