Addicks make Gower signing

Mark Gower has long been on Chris Powell’s wanted list and the manager hinted that although Gower has been brought in on loan, the deal could be made permanent in the summer.Mark Gower

Here’s what Powell had to say about his latest capture:

“He’s a midfielder I’ve had an eye on for a while.

“It’s an area that I felt we needed someone just to come in and boost the numbers. He’s got a good pedigree.

“He’s a talented player, a good user of the ball and I think he will just add quality to the squad. I’m looking at him just to help us over the line for the rest of the season and then who knows? Maybe depending on how it goes he may be someone I look at for the future.

“It’s never easy with trying to bring players in. I’ve managed to move one or two players out so that’s helped me get one or two in.

“I think Mark will fit in fine. He’s from the London area so that helps. I think he will be a good addition to us,” said Chris.

Gower has only featured three times for the Swans this season, though he was an unused substitute in their game against West Brom on Saturday. Powell admitted that the player’s lack of game time would be a factor he would have to consider. He continued:

“That’s something we are going to have to look at because being on the bench is fine but he hasn’t played many games.

“He hasn’t missed any training, that’s one thing we’ve found out, which is really good. He has obviously played a few games for the reserves, but that Championship pace is a little bit unforgiving at times.

“We will just see how he copes. I’m sure he will be fine. He’s been around for a while. He was an integral part of Swansea’s team when they got promoted and he’s a good footballer.

“He’s a good all-round character I’ve been told, good in the dressing room and experienced. Sometimes you need that within the group.

“We’ve got some good young players who express themselves but sometimes when things go against you and you have just got to handle the dressing room. Someone like him will boost people like Johnnie Jackson and Ricardo (Fuller), the experienced boys in that dressing room. I’m pleased that he’s come on board.”

The Charlton squad is not the most vocal one around so Gower will definitely give the Addicks a boost in that area. In 2011 Gower was (statistically) the most creative player in Europe, making over four chances a game for his colleagues.

He is a classy performer who can use the ball well and Charlton should play an easier on the eye style with him in the team.
