Charlton experienced a bad few days last week, losing twice in four days.
Whilst losing to a very good Wigan side was understandable, getting beaten by a poor Gillingham team set a few alarm bells ringing.
Another concern was that the Addicks failed to score in either game. Though they created chances – especially in the Gillingham game – they lacked a clinical finisher to take advantage of the good build up play.
Another disappointment at the Priestfield was Ricky Holmes picking up a stoppage time booking.
It was the influential winger’s fifth yellow card of the campaign, and he will now miss Saturday’s clash with Bury.
Robinson said referee, Graham Salisbury, apologised for the booking after the game, saying he reacted too quickly.
It seems strange, Holmes’ caution was for a clear act of dissent, which is an automatic yellow card offence.
Five cautions after only eight games is excessive, and Holmes will have to watch his step going forward.
Last season Charlton drew too many matches, this time around they have not drawn any thus far.
Some fans are concerned that three losses so early in the season makes promotion unlikely. Sheffield United only lost six times on their way to the title last season.
Wigan lost seven matches when they were promoted two seasons ago, and the Addicks suffered just five reverses in their title winning campaign.
But Phil Parkinson’s Bolton were runners-up to Sheffield United despite ten defeats.
Robinson’s ethos has always been to attack. Score plenty of goals and you will win plenty of matches has been his mantra.
Despite those three defeats in just eight games the Addicks are still in a play-off spot, emphasising that a few defeats is not necessarily a barrier to success.
But Robinson’s team will need to win regularly. They can ill afford to be without Holmes for any length of time, and they need to resolve their goal famine quickly.
They have some stiff tests coming up in October. They will face Peterborough at The Valley on international weekend, so they will be without Josh Magennis and Jay Dasilva, and they will also travel to Bradford.
Hopefully, Mark Marshall and Ben Reeves will be fully fit next month. They are classy players at this level, and would freshen things up and give the team a boost.
Most importanly though, the team need to find their shooting boots.
