June is traditionally the month when transfer speculation goes into overdrive.
The season has ended, contracts will expire at the end of the month for many players and their agents are busy trying to find them new clubs.
Much of the speculation is fuelled by agents using the media to generate interest in their clients and many fans are subsequently disappointed when the arrival of a good player does not materialise.
Charlton will want to revamp their striking options for the new campaign and will be looking to sign a target man, as well as a goal poacher. It is a bonus if the target man can also deliver a reasonable number of goals, hence the interest of several Championship clubs – including the Addicks – in Barnsley’s Chris O’Grady.
Charlton have not yet been linked with any goal grabbers but who might they have in mind? We do not know of course but here is a trio that might fit the bill.
St Johnstone’s Stevie May is a player that interests several English clubs and it is rumoured Rotherham may be planning an ambitious bid for him.
May is 21-years-old and a Scottish Under-21 international. He has had loan spells at Hamilton, scoring 25 goals from 33 appearances, and Alloa where he netted 19 goals in his 22 games.
After the experience he gained away from McDiarmid Park, May returned to St Johnstone and has scored 30 goals from 53 starts for the Saints in all competitions.
Johnny Russell’s fine season for Derby may mean English clubs, particularly those outside of the Premier League, once again look to Scotland as a source for burgeoning talent.
It has been a difficult season for Coventry. Home matches have been played in front of sparse crowds at Northampton and a ten point deduction effectively stifled any hopes of a promotion bid.
One ray of light for the Sky Blues though, has been academy produced striker, Callum Wilson. Wilson is a 22-year-old and has notched 22 goals in 49 appearances for Coventry.
Two years ago, Charlton were desperately close to signing Sam Baldock. When the deal fell through, Baldock signed a three-year deal at Bristol City. City were relegated at the end of Baldock’s first season at Ashton Gate and failed to regain their Championship place in the recently ended campaign.
Baldock has scored 34 goals in 67 league appearances for the Robins, including a haul of 24 last season. A second season in League One, with just a year to run on his contract, might be a situation that will encourage Bristol City to cash in on their asset.
Baldock will be a free agent next summer and City may also wish to get his salary off their wage bill.
Whether any of the the above trio are on the club’s radar is pure conjecture, but they would all relish playing at Championship level.
