There are stories circulating that suggest Chris Powell may make a summer move for Oldham’s 6’6″ powerhouse striker, Matt Smith.

Smith shot to prominence this season with his scoring exploits in Oldham’s fine FA Cup run. He scored twice in the 3-2 victory over Liverpool at Boundary Park and also netted the late equaliser that took the Everton tie to a replay at Goodison. Smith scored in that Goodison game as well.

Birmingham born Smith was recruited from the Midlands non-league circuit and scored just 3 goals from 28 appearances for the Latics last season. In all competitions, the striker who will be 24 in June, has netted 11 times in 40 appearances for Oldham this season.

With Michael Smith likely to be pushing for first team involvement next season, statisticians at The Valley will need to be vigilant.
