The transfer window will close at 11.00pm on Thursday and after Saturday’s disappointing defeat, Chris Powell admitted he may make a move in the market.Chris Powell6

There have been confused messages coming out of The Valley about possible transfers. Last week, a move to bring Anthony Wordsworth to The Valley seemed all but done, but Wordsworth has yet to arrive.

It may well be a case of brinkmanship by the Addicks to lower the fee but at Thursday’s press conference, Powell played down any link to the player. Earlier in the month, Powell gave the impression that he was very much interested in the Colchester midfielder but hinted that the switch might possibly have to wait until the summer. Again, that could have been a ploy to lower Colchester’s asking price.

When asked about transfers after the Sheffield Wednesday defeat, Powell had this to say:

“I’ll have to wait and see if one or two players become available and also there might be one or two of our fringe players possibly going out to get some football as well, but we’ll have to wait and see.

“I can say no and then all of a sudden I’ll bring in loads of players and vice-versa. It’s just a case of me seeing if anything can improve us and if we can financially do it.”

Finances seem to be the sticking point and would explain why the Wordsworth deal has been left so late. Possibly, Charlton could let a fringe player like Jordan Cook go to Colchester on loan until the end of the season.

The indications are that the rumours have come full circle and Powell could make a move for Wordsworth and a striker before Thursday’s deadline.
