Chris Powell played his cards close to his chest when asked if their would be any further additions to the squad at his weekly press conference on Thursday.
Probably the biggest pointer was when he suggested that any arrivals may be dependent on moving one or two players out. The question is which ones?
Powell said that Paul Hayes would not be leaving on loan and this is probably true rather than spin. Hayes is a provider, a creator more than an out-and-out goal scorer, and the only player of his type at the club. Jason Euell was a similar sort of player but is currently on loan at AFC Wimbledon.
Of the players brought in by Phil Parkinson, only Johnnie Jackson and Gary Doherty remain at the club. Jackson is pivotal to the team but Powell would like to move Doherty on, just as he did with Simon Francis and Paul Benson.
Cover for Chris Solly and possibly another central defender are the most likely areas Powell would want to strengthen. Doherty could be a useful asset to offer in an exchange deal.
Another player who has seen very little action is Mikel Alonso, who has had various injury problems. The club has an ample supply of midfielders in its ranks so Alonso could be allowed to leave. However, with his lack of matches it is difficult to see that he would attract much interest.
With Darrel Russell secured until the end of the season, Dale Stephens fit again and the emergence of Bradley Pritchard, perhaps Andy Hughes could be available. Hughes is a utility player who was originally brought in to play at right-back, so Powell may feel he will need his versatility at some stage.
Newcomer Danny Haynes is a pacy striker who, because of his speed, has played much of his career on the right side of midfield. Pritchard is another who can operate on the flank as well as in the middle.
Danny Green is the regular right-winger, and with the option of both Haynes and Pritchard to provide cover, it does beg the question of whether Scott Wagstaff might now be considered surplus to requirements.
