Barnsley were elevated to the Championship following their 3-1 victory over Millwall in the League One Play-Off Final at Wembley on Sunday.
The win capped a remarkable turnaround in the Tykes’ season, they were rock bottom in December. Paul Heckingbottom’s side also lifted the JPT Trophy at Wembley in March.
Barnsley came flying out the traps and were in front inside two minutes, thanks to a strike from Manchester United loanee, Ashley Fletcher.
Adam Hamill doubled the lead with a fantastic 25-yard effort, before Barnsley born Mark Beevers pulled one back for the Lions just before the break.
Lloyd Isgrove sealed promotion for Barnsley in the second-half.
Millwall also had a tremendous second half of the season, and Neil Harris will be disappointed that his side narrowly failed to return to the Championship at the first time of asking.
The result will of course give the Addicks the opportunity to improve their woeful record against their local rivals next season.
Monday afternoon sees the domestic season come to a close, when AFC Wimbledon take on Plymouth Argyle in the League Two Final, to decide who fills the one remaining place in next season’s League One line-up.
Wombles fans will be heavily outnumbered by the 30,000+ Green Army travelling up from the West Country.
Argyle have a massive catchment area. Along with Exeter, they are one of only two Football League clubs in Devon. Home Park is situated close to the Tamar Bridge, and the Pilgrims also draw strong support from Cornish fans.
For Charlton, the outcome could scarcely be more stark; another South London derby, or the longest trip of the season.
The game kicks-off at Wembley at 3.00pm.
