Addicks keen to move on

Johann Berg Gudmundsson wants to move quickly on from the Ipswich reverse, and is already looking towards Saturday’s game at the Amex against Brighton.

This is what the Icelander said to the club site:

“We’ve played some good football lately, but now we need to forget this game (Ipswich) and move on to the next one, which will be a very difficult one at Brighton.

“This league is very unpredictable, as everyone knows, anything can happen and we’ll go there to cause an upset.

“We had some positives on Saturday but they came too late. We need to do it quicker because when you’re 3-0 down and making chances after 80 minutes then it’s too late.

“We deserved a goal but we needed to be playing like that in the first half. We had a couple of good moments early on but then we conceded two silly goals against a tough side like Ipswich.

“This is the Championship. You can never be too confident because you get punished. We got punished by a team that play a simple way. They play an old style; long, and we didn’t play as we normally do.

“We started to hit too many long balls as well and that’s not our game,” said Gudmundsson.

Brighton are top of the table and remain unbeaten this season. They have won seven and drawn two of their nine home games.

Chris Hughton has turned the Seagulls’ fortunes round this season, after a difficult 2014/15 campaign.

Brighton’s success has been built on a sound team ethic. Player for player, they do not appear to have the strongest squad, but they have become a solid and ultra consistent outfit.

Hughton would probably like to see his team win more games on their travels, where they have won three and drawn six of their fixtures.

They are a formidable force at the Amex, and only Cardiff and Preston have avoided defeat in Sussex.

The Seagulls are not prolific scorers though. All of their seven wins have been by the odd goal, either 1-0 or 2-1. The only time they have scored more than twice all season, is when they beat Ipswich 3-2 at Portman Road.

Karel Fraeye is likely to keep things tight and hope to nick a goal on the break. The interim head coach will be hoping skipper, Johnnie Jackson, recovers from the hamstring injury he picked up against the Tractor Boys.

The Charlton Under-21s won 2-1 at Brentford on Monday afternoon, their ninth win in ten games.

The Addicks fielded a strong side that included Nick Pope ,El-Hadji Ba, Harry Lennon, Regan Charles-Cook, Karlan Ahearne-Grant, Josh Umerah, Franck Moussa and Zakaraya Bergdich.

Goals from Moussa and Umerah gave the Addicks a two goal lead, before Maxime Colin scored a consolation for the Bees.

It was a scruffy game, not helped by the windy conditions.
