Next week is a World Cup qualifying week which has meant rescheduling certain domestic fixtures.
FA Cup replays are normally staged ten days after the original match. In days of yore, they took place in the midweek after the first game but an extra week was added due the notice required for the matches to be policed.
The Blackburn v Millwall replay will take place at Ewood Park on Wednesday evening, less than 72 hours before the Lions face Charlton at The Valley. Presumably Rovers had to make provisional arrangements with the police to ensure the game could go ahead this week.
Addicks fans will be hoping the match goes to extra-time to further sap the strength of Saturday’s opponents.
It is difficult to know what the best result for Charlton would be. A win would buoy Millwall’s spirits but would their players have one eye on Wembley and the semi-final? With Wigan awaiting the winners, Kenny Jackett and Michael Appleton will both fancy their chances of making the final.
A defeat could demoralise Jackett’s side but would allow them to focus on arresting their recent faltering league form.
Either way, Charlton will have the edge going into the game and they need to take advantage of it.
The Chelsea v Manchester United replay is real headache for the FA. With Chelsea’s involvement in the Europa League, there are no available free dates in the calendar before the semi-finals. The dates for the semis are set in stone so it could be that the game will be played on the day the Manchester derby is scheduled.
