An ecstatic Chris Powell, while Gary Bowyer claimed Simon Church’s goal should have been ruled out for offside, was how the two managers interpreted events at Blackburn on Saturday.
Have the Addicks turned the corner or will the win turn out be a flash in the pan?
Chris Powell took his entire senior squad of fit players to Ewood Park. As well as the eighteen involved in the match, Jordan Cook, Callum Harriott, Andy Hughes and Joe Pigott also made the sponsored train journey north.
Powell reverted back to a standard 4-4-2 formation with Bradley Pritchard and Cameron Stewart patrolling the wide areas in midfield.
The traditional shape is the one the players are most comfortable with and when Powell utilises the system, results tend to improve.
One decision the manager will have to make before Sunday is whether to introduce fit again skipper, Johnnie Jackson, to the starting line-up. Jordan Cousins and Dale Stephens have played well recently but Powell tends to put Jackson back in the team as soon as he can.
As well as Jackson, Yann Kermorgant also made an appearance from the bench on Saturday. Kermorgant is another who is an automatic choice and there seems little doubt that the Frenchman will replace Marvin Sordell against Wigan on Sunday.
The winning goal had real quality about it. Dale Stephens won a tackle in midfield, had the vision to spot Simon Church and found him with a delightful chipped pass. Church chested the ball down and swept it home in exemplary fashion.
The goal came after just seven minutes and the Addicks barely troubled Jake Kean in the Rovers goal after that. Ben Hamer had to produce one stunning save to foil Jordan Rhodes, but apart from those incidents, chances were at a premium with both defences on top.
Charlton defended their lead stoically and deserved their win but can they do it on a regular basis?
Powell would no doubt like to think so but his team may have to increase their firepower to do so. The Addicks rarely put a run of clean sheets together so will need to score at least twice, on a regular basis, to keep the points tally clicking over at an acceptable rate.
Wigan showed plenty of attacking intent on Saturday and will come to The Valley to win on Sunday. Powell may be working on a plan to make use of the space the Latics leave on their frequent forays upfield. If the manager succeeds, he may have cause to celebrate again come 5.00pm on Sunday evening.
