One of the most frustrating things for football fans is having a game called off at short notice.
The Blackpool pitch is not in good condition these days and the projected weather forecast earlier in the week was a concern.
There was heavy rain during the morning in Blackpool, but it had eased by midday. There appeared to be nothing untoward, but news drifted through that referee, Carl Boyeson, was inspecting the pitch at 1.30pm.
A further inspection was scheduled for 2.00pm, but spirits rose when news filtered through that the groundsman was confident he could get the pitch playable.
But shortly before 2.00pm the game was called off despite both managers wanting to play the game. Karl Robinson even offered to play the game at 4.00pm if it allowed the groundstaff enough time to get the game on.
The postponement does raise a questions though. It had stopped raining by midday, the pitch was deemed unplayable at 2.00, so the game must have been in doubt from early morning, so why was an inspection not carried out sooner?
Charlton now face a potential fixture pile up. The game at Shrewsbury is unlikely to be played until the Spring, the Blackpool game now has to be rearranged, and if MK Dons beat Coventry in the FA Cup, the Addicks’ trip to stadium:mk on 17 February will be postponed.
Many Charlton fans stayed on to attend the Jimmy Armfield tribute at Bloomfield Road.
