Addicks facing tough Xmas period
Addicks facing tough Xmas period

Karl Robinson’s first game in charge of Charlton was an FA Cup tie against former club, MK Dons last December.

‎The Addicks were eliminated 3-1 in the replay after a turgid 0-0 draw at The Valley.

‎Robinson quickly avenged that defeat with a 1-0 win in the league fixture at stadium:mk on Boxing Day. Ademola Lookman’s 38th minute strike was enough to take the points back to south London.

Lookman’s strike was notable for another reason though. That win was the only three point haul Charlton have recorded in December during Roland Duchatelet’s four year tenure at the club.

One victory in eighteen attempts is an astonishing record, and one that Robinson will be desperate to improve on this year, but it will not be easy.

‎His team face Blackpool at The Valley on Saturday, then have two difficult away games at Southend and Wigan.

‎The Addicks are not in good form right now – they have only won one of their last six league games – and have taken just five points from those games.

They need to arrest the slide straight away, despite a lengthy injury list.

Blackpool give Charlton an ideal‎ opportunity to get back to winning ways; the Seasiders are also in poor form, they have won just one of their last seven games in the league.

Southend are formidable foes at Roots Hall – they have lost only one of their eleven league games at home – and Wigan have won eight and drawn two of their eleven home League One clashes.

But Robinson will be encouraged by the way his team competed with in-form Blackburn at Ewood Park on Saturday, and is likely to be targeting at least a seven point haul from the three games.

The manager is hoping to make early inroads when the January transfer window opens. If he can harvest a reasonable points return before the end of the year, and make an early signing or two, it will be a major boost to getting the promotion bid back on track.
