Addicks facing striking dilemma
Addicks facing striking dilemma

David N’Gog proved to be the difference between the two sides on Saturday but things could have been different. Though the Addicks got in some good positions, Adam Bogdan in the Bolton goal had a comfortable afternoon.

One thing that was very noticeable was Yann Kermorgant not being seen at his best in the lone striking role. Kermorgant wins most aerial duels but is a player who needs a strike partner to feed off his flick ons. If the system requires the front man to hold the ball up, it is a role far better suited to Rob Hulse.

It was a surprise that Leon Cort was not recalled to deal with the physical prsesence of Kevin Davies. Chris Powell has spoken about rotating the squad more this season but it remains to be seen if that applies to all players and whether the system the manager utilises influences the policy.

Danny Haynes’ pace in the middle was instrumental in the good run but he started Saturday on the left flank which did not bring the best out of him.

Most of the current squad are happier playing in a 4-4-2 formation and this may be the best way to get a result against Sheffield Wednesday.

Powell will have more options at his disposal at Hillsborough on Saturday, though he will be without the suspended Dale Stephens. Cedric Evina will have had two weeks training under his belt and will come into consideration. Evina is quick and loves to get forward so would pose a few problems for the Owls defence.

Ricardo Fuller will also be fit enough to be involved after recovering from his hamstring problem.

Having the right options on the bench and making changes at the correct time will also play a crucial part in determining the course of the game.

If the starting line-up and shape are correct and the necessary changes are made at the appropriate time, the Addicks will have every chance of repeating last season’s success at Hillsborough.
