The first confirmed game of the 2013/14 campaign was announced on Monday morning when the Addicks were paired with League Two outfit, Oxford United, in the first round of the Capital One Cup.
The game will take place at The Valley during week commencing 5 August but will almost certainly be played on Tuesday 6 August.
Millwall will host AFC Wimbledon in their first round tie, but as both Charlton and the Lions staged games on the same evening in last season’s competition, there should be no problems with the two neighbours playing on the same night.
Whether the Oxford game will be the first game of the campaign to be staged at The Valley will not be known until the Football League fixtures are revealed on Wednesday morning.
The Addicks last faced Oxford in this competition in September 2002 when the U’s triumphed in a penalty shoot-out at The Valley. The game went to penalties following a dull 0-0 draw.
Charlton went first but eventually lost 6-5. Jason Euell and Claus Jensen both missed before Paul Konchesky, Matthias Svensson and John Robinson netted to take the shot-out into sudden death. Steve Brown failed to score but Oxford failed to take advantage.
Joanatan Johansson and Jon Fortune then converted before Radostin Kishishev missed. Oxford did not spurn this opportunity and were rewarded with a home tie against Aston Villa. Unfortunately, the U’s run ended there, Villa running out comfortable 3-0 winners.
Ticket prices will be announced in due course but could be £10 for adults and £5 for concessions.
