Addicks CEO steps down for third time

It was announced on Friday that Peter Varney, affectionately known to fans as ‘Reg’, is to leave Charlton Athletic once again.

This is the third time that the former CEO has resigned his post, the first time was on 2008, a year after the club was relegated from the Premier League.

Here is what Charlton chairman, Michael Slater, had to say:

“Peter always intended to remain on the board for a period of two years after the takeover but, following the club’s promotion to the Championship, he has decided to stand down earlier than planned in order that his successor can familiarise himself with the club and his new role during the summer.

“The board respects Peter’s decision and thanks him for his part in turning around the fortunes of the club.”

There was no mention that Varney was to stay for just two years at the time of the takeover and the timing of his departure seems strange. If the idea was to let his successor, Martin Prothero, familarise himself with his role, why did Varney not leave after the Hartlepool game?

The conundrum may become a little clearer as the summer progresses.
