Charlton were beaten 6-0 by Arsenal in a training game at the Emirates on Saturday.
The Gunners are a week ahead of Lee Bowyer’s team in their training schedule, and Mikel Arteta’s side are packed with high quality players.
Both teams fielded different line-ups in each half, and Bowyer made three substitutions during the course of the afternoon.
Lewisham born, Eddie Nketiah, netted a hat-trick, with Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Joe Willock completing the scoring.
Due to current FA regulations, the match had to be officiated by the two clubs’ coaching staff.
The game gave Bowyer the opportunity to get some minutes into his squad and importantly, they came through without picking up any injuries.
Bowyer had this to say after the game:
“It was a good workout. Obviously playing Arsenal, they are a proper side. It was a difficult workout and it was good fitness.
“Of course we were rusty, we were always going to be that but the lads worked hard and put all their effort in and we looked quite good fitness wise. It was a good test for us.
“Everyone came through unscathed which is important for me. They get the fitness and get some of the rustiness out but the most important thing is that we come out with no injuries and that we’re ready for Hull, I told them before the game ‘No stupid tackles, this is about fitness’.”
“To be playing against those players. Some of them who have been playing Champions League for years, playing against a proper opposition, every single position they are really strong.
“Our players didn’t disgrace themselves, they worked hard and tried to do the right things, it will be good for them, a good learning curve.
“I said to them before the game, the most important game is Hull. Arsenal are a week in front of us training wise, so the most important thing is getting ready for Hull the best we can. This will have done us the world of good moving on to that.”
It would have been a great experience for the players to perform at a stadium like the Emirates, albeit in surreal circumstances.
The Addicks will play further warm-up games against Crystal Palace and Fulham before they recommence their Championship campaign in two weeks time.
