After releasing a statement on Monday evening saying they were starting the search for the right head coach, the process was brought to a swift conclusion on Tuesday.
As soon as the news of Bob Peeters’ sacking broke on Sunday evening, Guy Luzon was installed as red hot favourite to be his replacement.
Following Monday’s statement, Luzon seemed less of a certainty to be given the job, but by Tuesday lunchtime, it was being reported that he was engaged in talks with the Addicks.
By late afternoon Sky Sports News were showing pictures of Luzon at The Valley. The club announced the appointment shortly afterwards, though the official unveiling will be at a press conference on Wednesday morning.
Luzon was dismissed by Standard Liege in October and his appointment is hardly likely to fill Charlton fans with glee, the new head coach will have to win them over.
Here is what he said earlier:
“I am happy to have joined Charlton and will work as hard as I can to try and make the club successful.
“We have talented players in the squad and it is my job to try and bring the best out of them.
“It is important to have a positive spirit in the team and I want to ensure the entire group is fighting together for the good of the club.
“I look forward to taking training for the first time and getting my ideas across to the players.”
Club owner, Roland Duchatelet paid this tribute to Luzon after his appointment:
“I think the appointment of Guy Luzon will prove to be a very good one for the club.
“I regard him as an extremely talented coach who has already achieved a lot in his career so far.
“There were a lot of records broken during his first season at Standard Liège and they had the best defensive record in the league.
“He is a passionate coach who will give his all to Charlton and I hope supporters will get behind him.”
39-year-old Luzon has signed an 18 month deal that will keep him at The Valley until the end of next season.
He favours a more direct style, so it would seem likely that he will want to bring a target man in.
Luzon fell out with a number of players at Standard, including Yoni Buyens and Frederic Bulot.
It will be interesting to see if the new head coach can quickly reinstall the team spirit that has been a major part of Charlton teams over the years.
