Charlton Athletic have announced that four of their current squad will be allowed to leave this summer.Soccer - npower Football League Championship - Brighton and Hove Albion v Charlton Athletic - Withdean Stadium

Matt Taylor, Scott Wagstaff, Ricardo Fuller and Salim Kerkar have all been told their futures lie away from The Valley.

Taylor joined the Addicks from Exeter in the summer of 2011 and made 41 appearances in last season’s League One title winning side. This season he has been a more peripheral figure, making 12 appearances, half of them from the bench. His only goal for the club came against Halifax in last season’s FA Cup match at the Shay.

Taylor’s departure suggests at least one, and possibly both, of Leon Cort and Dorian Dervite will be offered deals to extend their time at The Valley. Dervite has parnered Michael Morrison in recent weeks and has impressed.

Scott Wagstaff is the club’s current longest serving player and made his debut at Barnsley at the same time as Jonjo Shelvey in April 2008. Wagstaff has scored 22 goals from his 141 appearances in all competitions for the Addicks.

Bristol City’s Albert Adomah and Notts County’s Alan Judge have been rumoured as being on Charlton’s radar and both can play in Wagstaff’s favoured wide right berth.

Kerkar and Fuller both joined on year long contracts last summer. Kerkar was given the opportunity to establish himself in the side when Johnnie Jackson moved to a more central midfield role. Kerkar has also filled in at left-back but has never looked totally convincing. He scored his only goal for the club in last month’s 6-0 win at Barnsley. Kerkar made 15 league starts plus a further 8 appearances from the bench.

Fuller may have been a trickier decision. The Jamaican oozes class but is reputedly on exceptional money. He made 20 league starts plus 11 substitute appearances and he scored five goals. Possibly there were financial reasons behind the decision. Fuller’s release may confirm newspaper reports that Danny Haynes will be offered a new contract. Another Bristol City player, Sam Baldock, is thought to be interesting Charlton. Baldock was wanted by the Addicks a year ago, so a fresh move would be no surprise.

There are likely to be more players leaving The Valley during the summer. Some of those offered contracts may feel their chances of regular first team action may be best served away from Charlton.

The Charlton Under-21 side defeated Huddersfield 6-1 at Sparrows Lane on Tuesday and will meet Cardiff City in the final of the national Development League competition. Joe Piggot netted four goals – one a penalty – with the other strikes coming from Ade Azeez and substitute, Michael Smith. The final is likely to take place on Saturday at the Cardiff City Stadium. Cardiff scored twice in the last ten minutes to edge out Leicester 3-2 at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday evening.
