Adams: consistency the key for Kent
Adams: consistency the key for Kent

Head coach Jimmy Adams is looking for consistency in Kent’s performances, but has admitted that the team are still a “work in progress”.

Kent saw out a draw on the final day of their first home game of the season against Leicestershire yesterday, following a defeat in their opening game of the season at Worcestershire last week.

After the whole of the first day was washed out by rain, Kent struggled to impose themselves on the game, despite the odd impressive period.

Adams admitted after the game that though there were one of two promising performances, there was still plenty for the side to work on.

“It was an interesting game”, Adams said.

“I’m a little bit disappointed that we didn’t have a centurion in our first innings. The wicket was pretty good and I think we had enough starts, and I would have expected somebody to have gone on and really gone big on a wicket like that.

“I am also of the opinion that we could have been a bit more disciplined in our bowling, across both innings. There are areas that we need to focus on going forward, because I think we have players here capable of achieving both those targets.”

Adams also stressed the importance of the side performing well on a regular basis if they are to achieve long-term success.

“Just being a little bit more consistent in our cricket – I think that’s the main thing for me”, he explained.

“If you are going to grow as a team, and eventually come out of Division Two cricket, it’s going to come on the back of consistency, and I think that’s an area that we have to improve on.

“If you’re not exhibiting that level of consistency then you won’t get the returns over and over again, and that’s what we want – we want to build a team that can perform consistently.

“I’m not necessarily saying that you’re going to win games or win every game, but there’s a level of consistency that you come to expect, and we’re not there yet – we’re still a work in progress.

“Like I said, these two games have given us a lot to think about, and we’ll certainly do that and hopefully we’ll see signs come the game against Surrey.”
