It’s already been a season of two halves for Gillingham as Connor Prescott looks at their indifferent season so far.
Gillingham had a very busy transfer window this past summer, signing 9 new players including the free transfer of ex Sunderland and Blackburn forward Bradley Dack.
The Gills had a very good start to the season winning their first game of the season four goals to one at home to Carlisle United, a game that saw goals from two new signings as well as a Man of the match performance from veteran substitute Jonny Williams.
An impressive first game was followed by another three games unbeaten in the league before falling to a first defeat away at Doncaster Rovers. A game that saw them register only a 0.25 expected goals , their lowest XG of the season so far.
Despite falling to the first defeat of the season, the Gills responded well winning three games on the spin including an impressive one nil win away at Notts County who are currently fighting for promotion.
Gillingham picking up 19 points from a possible 24 points, left fans feeling excited about the remainder of the season hoping that they could push for that promotion back to League One after falling to relegation back in 2022.
However, a run of poor form saw the Gills pick up only one more point in their next 6 games, which led to them falling out of the play-off positions as they now sit in 11th, only 2 points behind Bradford City who hold the final play-off spot.
Gills fans will be a little disappointed with the performances of their new signings, with Jayden Clarke, who is in his third season currently sitting at the top of the scoring table with 4 goals.
Fans will be underwhelmed with the signing Bradley Dack, who has appeared just once this season in the league, playing just 14 minutes in a two nil home victory over Barrow.
It has not been all doom and gloom for the Gills, with good spells throughout this winless streak. Despite a 2-0 loss at home to Newport County, the Gills dominated and created chances suggesting they should have come away with the three points, showing there is hope going towards the back end of the season.
Next up Gillingham will welcome league leaders Port Vale to Priestfield Stadium, followed by a trip away to high flying Walsall, hoping that an upset against two of the favourites can help get their season back on track in a bid to push and secure a play-off spot come the end of the season.
