Although, most Gills fans are over the moon at the result this past weekend there is an argument over if it was two points lost or a point gained.
After a frantic first 15 minutes saw The Gills take an early 3-1 lead over The Robins, Charlie Austin pulled the host back into the game to clinch a 3-3 draw.
Gills boss Neil Harris said after the game that “it’s a point gained” and thought that the hosts were good value for their comeback saying:
“Sometimes you throw away a two goal lead but I don’t think we threw it away, Swindon earned it.”
I have to say after some time to reflect on the result, I certainly have to agree with the gaffer in that Swindon showed their play-off credentials rather than us throwing away that lead.
Let’s be honest, the real difference was Charlie Austin, he was the forefront of that comeback and I think it’s safe to say he will be the man leading them on their quest for the play-offs. He showed just how good he is with the two goals to bring The Robins back into it, one of which was a text book striker’s header.
It’s movement like that which sets him above most, if not all, of the strikers at this level.
Overall it’s an extremely positive result for the Gills on the road, if you’d have offered any fan a draw before kick off, I think that many would have ripped your hand off for it given the league positions of the teams and that Swindon were coming in off the back of scoring 5 goals against Grimsby and most certainly trying to mount a play-off push this season.
Taking into account that Gillingham have been the lowest scoring team in the land for most of the season, to score 3 in 15 minutes it’s something pretty special in itself but I think the performance was something to be extremely proud of all round.
Robbie McKenzie for me is a player that doesn’t get quite enough praise, but he was absolutely fantastic again and of course Tom Nichols getting his third Gills goal in as many games, just a couple of the positives to pick out!
It certainly looks like times are changing down at Priestfield with dare I say it some smiles coming back around the ground from the fans, but not only that Harris looks to be the manager that came in at the back end of last season, happy and hopeful rather that what we saw in the front end of the season when many fans were even calling for his job.
But the game wasn’t the only thing that had Gills fans talking after the game, the new owner Brad Galinson tweeted: “That was a match! Coming in, I would have traded for 1 point. At half, I only would consider 3. Happy to have 1. Our team is tremendous and only getting better. More signings before end of window. @TheGillsFC #SleepingGiant”
With more signings promised to come through the door it does feel as though Gillingham can start to look up the table rather than down based off recent form as well as potentially strengthening the squad further!
It’s Crawley up next at home for the Gills which has already sold out due to the pay what you can initiative from the club for this game! I’ll be looking forward to this one later in the week and attending the game myself, but here is what Gills boss Neil Harris had to say ahead of this huge game at the bottom of the table:
“We have done well in the last three games, now we move on to Crawley. There are going to be 9,000 Gillingham fans turning up and they will be excited and my players will feed off it.”
It certainly is set up to be a cracker of a game down at ME7 this Saturday!
But what do you think Gills fans, a point gained or two points lost this past weekend?
