Tuesday’s results were not too bad for Charlton. Their fans would have had some anxious moments when Plymouth took the lead at Spotland, but Rochdale quickly restored parity.
Prior to Saturday’s games, Argyle were a point behind the Addicks with two games in hand – very much advantage to the Devon side. Now they are three points adrift of Charlton, with an inferior goal difference and just one game in hand.
Wigan drew 1-1 at Bristol Rovers, and Blackburn’s win at Doncaster sealed their return to the Championship.
Bradford’s 2-0 home win over MK Dons kept their slim play-off hopes alive, and Peterborough and Portsmouth also have an outside chance of being involved for the third promotion spot.
But realistically, Shrewsbury and Rotherham will be joined by two from Charlton, Plymouth and Scunthorpe in the play-offs.
The Addicks entertain Blackburn on Saturday, while Plymouth will host Rotherham. Scunthorpe travel to MK Dons.
A genuine six pointer will be played next Tuesday when Scunthorpe host Plymouth.
On the final day of the regular season, Charlton travel to Rochdale, Plymouth visit Gillingham, and Scunthorpe host Bradford.
There are sure to me more twists and turns before the final whistle is blown on 5 May, but the most likely outcome as things stand, is that Lee Bowyer’s side will face Shrewsbury in the play-offs, with Scunthorpe taking on Rotherham.
