A big season ahead for The Gills?
A big season ahead for The Gills?

Gillingham come off the back of a mediocre season that saw them finish 12th, with this season’s expectations being a push for promotion, an aim boosted by key signings.

The club scored 46 goals last season and will hope that the signings of proven goal scorer Elliott Nevitt and wide man Jack Nolan will boost the Gills attacking threat, with both hitting double figures last campaign.

Looking at who’s in charge heading into the season, Mark Bonner who joined the club in May 2024 will be hoping to gain his second promotion as a manager, looking to recreate his accomplishment with Cambridge United back in 2021.

Since the appointment of Mark in early May, Gillingham have made 5 new signings, a key signing in AFC Wimbledon’s Armani Little. The seasoned central midfielder helped his team with 4 goals and 4 assists last campaign and was key to Wimbledon’s significant improvement.

Last Season saw January signing Remeao Hutton struggle to continue his form for Swindon and fans will be hoping he can make an impact this time around after grabbing 7 assists in the first half of the season for League Two side Swindon Town.

Looking at the Gills’ tactics last year, the team started to play with a 4-2-3-1 formation for the first 8 games, scoring only 7 goals, but managing to pick up an impressive 6 wins.

However, this formation saw Gillingham struggle to break teams down and create chances due to a lack of attacking threat which inevitably led to a drop off in results that saw them trickle down the league table.

The formation this season, if it is to stay the same, will allow the likes of Jack Nolan to continue his fine form and help create chances for Elliott Nevitt who will certainly have his sights set on the Golden Boot.

The aim for the club this year looks to be promotion with the strength of new signings and Gills fans can be hopeful after the club picked up a goalless draw at home to Millwall and a win against Watford in their first 2 pre-season games.
