Things could scarcely have gone worse for the Addicks on Tuesday evening, with Huddersfield, Luton and Wigan all winning. Charlton fans’ frustration would have been heightened by the timing and nature of the goals.
Huddersfield and Wigan both snatched stoppage time winners, and Luton’s victory came courtesy of an 86th minute own goal.
Huddersfield jumped two points ahead of the Addicks, who are now just four points above the drop zone with 17 games to go.
It is impossible to overstate how crucial a month February is for Lee Bowyer’s team. As well as locking horns with two of the bottom three – Barnsley & Luton – they also play the two teams immediately above them – Huddersfield and Stoke.
There were few positive developments on the recruitment front on Monday. Charlton have apparently lost interest in signing Florentin Pogba, but the latest rumours suggest they are interested in taking Watford wiz kid, Tom Dele Bahiru on loan.
Shamrock Rovers’ Irish International midfielder, Jack Byrne, is another player under consideration. With the winter transfer window closing on Friday, it seems as though another late flurry of activity is likely.
Bowyer will want to assemble as strong a squad as possible before the deadline passes. February will be his team’s month of destiny.
