Charlton scored a point on their travels this afternoon with a one all draw against Sheffield Wednesday in a game they will feel they could have won.
Guy Luzon welcomed back suspended duo, Chris Solly and Yoni Buyens, and also brought Chris Eagles and Simon Church back.
Tal Ben Haim, Alou Diarra, Frederic Bulot and Tony Watt dropped out. Ben Haim did not travel, the latter trio were on the bench.
The game was played in difficult conditions, the pitch was in poor condition and there was also a swirling wind for the players to contend with.
A curio for the fans was the rare appearance of a female official, Liverpool’s Helen Byrne, was one of Darren Bond’s assistant.
It was a strange game, Charlton had by far the better of the opening period but went in a goal down, while the Owls dominated the second period, only to concede an equaliser.
Johann Gudmundsson played Chris Eagles in, and the winger’s tidy finish should have given the Addicks the lead. Unfortunately for the visitors, Eagles was incorrectly adjudged to have been offside and his effort was ruled out.
Morgan Fox had two good chances to open his acoount and Church was also foiled by Wednesday keeper, Keiran Westwood.
As the half-time whistle approached, the hosts took the lead. Lewis Buxton’s cross from the right was deftly touched home by Caolan Lavery.
Whatever Stuart Gray said during the break had the desired effect, the Owls dominated proceedings after the restart.
Like Charlton though, Wednesday were unable to convert territorial advantage and greater possession into goals, and they too paid the price.
With a quarter-of-an-hour left, Igor Vetokele released Eagles whose fierce shot was parried by Westwood. Gudmundsson reacted quickest, he latched onto the loose ball, checked inside onto his left-foot, and rifled a shot past the keeper to level things up.
The Owls came close to instantly regaining the lead. Lavery hit both bar and post in quick succession and substitute, Atdhe Nuhiu, spurned a glorious chance when he headed wide with the goal at his mercy.
Jeremy Helan had to receive lengthy attention for a serious looking injury during stoppage time as the game failed to produce a late winner.
Over the 90 minutes, a draw was probably the right result, though both sides will feel they should have won.
