Up to 350 classic sports cars will descend on Brands Hatch next weekend as the 18 race Historic Sports Car Club Superprix will take place next weekend.
A huge grid of 36 cars which will include Formula 5000 V8-powered cars, nimble Formula 2 racers, plus Formula 3 and Formula Atlantic machinery are all set to line up and contest for the Derek Bell Trophy.
Many of the cars would have been on the north Kent circuit in the past in the race of champions meetings, amongst these returning cars is the Chevron B24 that won the 1973 event which will have FIA Historic F1 champion Greg Thornton at the wheel, former formula 1 driver Ian Ashley and Grand Prix racer Ian Flux will also be racing in a tough field which also includes historic Formula Ford driver Michael Lyons.
However, the largest race of the weekend will be in the Guards Trophy where an astonishing 47 car grid featuring sports racers and GTs to recall the circuit’s great history. This entry will consist of a large contingent of Chevrons, Jaguar E-Types, Lotus Elans and MGBs as well as many others from the 1960s.
Further action packed racing will come in the form of the Historic Road Sports categories with over 50 entries between the 60s and 70s categories, manufacturers from all over the world will be represented as classic British Marques will do battle with their European rivals including a rare Alfa Romeo Disco Volante and DeTomaso Mangusta, whilst Japan will also be represented in the form of the Datsun Z cars.
As well as the Derek Bell Trophy more than 150 single seater cars will compete in specific races for Formula 2, Formula 3, Formula Junior and Formula Ford cars.
The meeting will also include classic saloon cars in the Historic Touring Car Championship in which nimble European cars such as Lotus Cortinas, Minis and Hillman Imps will face the challenges of engine tuner Neil Brown’s Ford Mustang and former BTCC driver Nick Whale’s Studebacker Lark Daytona 500.
Whale will also be driving in BTCC cars from the 1990s as he and double champion John Cleland take on a field of Super Touring Championship saloons.
