It was Gills Ladies that claimed all three points in the local clash with Charlton Women on Sunday afternoon.
Victory for the Chatham Town based side saw James Marrs’ side move five points clear at the top of the FA Women’s Premier League Southern Division.
It was largely one traffic in the first half with Gills Ladies ripping holes in the Charlton defence and it came as no surprise when Charlotte Gurr opened the scoring in the 17th minute.
She was to curl the ball past Addicks keeper Megan Lynch to claim her 21st goal of the season and it took just another nine minutes for Gills Ladies to double their lead.
Fliss Gibbons was to fire the ball home on 26 minutes and the game was all but put to bed on the stroke of half time when left back Jade Keogh’s long range free kick sailed into the back of the net.
Charlton Women put up more of a fight in the second half and were duly rewarded with a goal on 71 minutes when Kit Graham tucked the ball away, but it was too little too late.
Gillingham could have and should have increased their advantage throughout the second half, but were never really tested enough by a Charlton side who failed to live up to expectations.
The victory for the Gills Ladies represents the start of a big week for the club as they take on Charlton again on Thursday night in the Kent Cup Final at Maidstone United’s Gallagher Stadium.
They then face the biggest game of the season as they head to Boreham Wood on Sunday afternoon to take on Arsenal Ladies in the Fifth Round of the FA Women’s Cup.
