Welling secure Blue Square South title

Welling United collected the point required at Boreham Wood that won the Blue Square Bet South title in all but name.FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Although Salisbury City can still catch Welling with two victories on the road, and a Wings defeat at home to Eastleigh, the sixteen goal advantage that Welling hold in goal difference should be ample to ensure Welling claim the Championship and promotion to the Conference Premier.

Fittingly, it was a goal from all time Conference South leading goalscorer, Lee Clarke, that proved enough to enable the Welling celebrations to commence at the sound of referee David Rock’s final whistle.

Dayle Grubb shot wide for Weston following a block on Ashley Kington’s initial effort but that was a rare moment of hope for the Seagulls’ supporters and it came as no shock when Welling went ahead.

It won’t worry Welling supporters too much that the match itself won’t be one that lives long in the spectators’ memories. The first half in particular produced few moments of real excitement.

Joe Healy, who was presented with the away supporters’ player of the year award after the game, had an early opportunity but saw his shot deflected beyond the far post having collected Ross Lafayette’s knock down.

He also fired wide from distance whilst the hosts’ only shot in the first period was a long range effort by ex-Wing Loick Pires that Sam Mott gathered comfortably.

Jake Reid hit a shot wide early in the second half and then headed a Jamie Day free kick over the bar before being replaced by Kiernan Hughes-Mason.

Lafayette touched a Hughes-Mason cross just wide before Welling went ahead.FOOTBALL (WELLING AWAY)

Spotting Clarke’s run, Healy played the perfect through ball and the Welling captain made no mistake with a clinical finish.

This appeared to awaken Boreham Wood, who required a victory to give them hope of participating in the play-offs.

Mott was required to make a save from Greg Morgan before the hosts equalised when Chez Isaac converted Cliff Akurang’s flick on.

Soon after Lafayette had an opportunity to put Welling back ahead but Callum Reynolds was on hand to clear off the line.

Mott was called upon to save from Charlie Moone, who was later cautioned for a challenge on Jamie Day that was not in keeping with the match overall, and a marauding run by Loui Fazakerley on his return from injury was ended when his shot was half blocked and James Russell was able to gather.

The joint meanest defences in the league ensured there was no further drama and the sizeable Welling following’s celebrations commenced as soon as the final whistle sounded.
